The Sound of Cicadas: Poetry Reading & Roundtable

Featuring NM Poet Laureate Lauren Camp, Albuquerque Poet Laureate Emeritus Hakim Bellamy, Academy of American Poets 2023 First Book Award Winner Sara Daniele Rivera and Scott Wiggerman, Founder of Dos Gatos Press.

We invite you to join us for an evening of poetry and conversation with these incredibly talented poets. Poets will share their own work for the first hour, then we will have an open panel, or roundtable, discussion.

The theme for the evening's discussion is "The Art of Performance" and poets will share varying perspectives on the importance and tradition of sharing poetry through verbal expression and the ways in which poetry continues to engage in the oral tradition.

This event is free of charge, and is a kickoff event for the Chicharra Poetry Festival taking place March 20-22 across Albuquerque. The festival offers numerous free workshops, open mics and events for everyone, no matter what style of poetry you prefer.

Haiku Head-to-Head Championship

There’s a legend that in the early part of the 1670’s, Bashō and his students devised an event called “the seashell game” in which poets competed head-to-head with their original haiku and a winner was selected by a judge.

In the early 1990s, over 3 centuries later, a poet from the Illinois poetry slam scene named Daniel Ferri created the Haiku Death Match. The slam-style haiku, also known as “ku,” is just a 17 (or less) syllables poem and contains no title. Poets battle one-on-one until only one poet remains.

A classic in the world of slam poetry festivals, and one of our favorite events, the Haiku Head-to-Head Championship is open to any poet from anywhere who thinks they have the 17 syllable chops to sign up!

This year, this event will take place at an Albuquerque icon, the Guild Cinema! If you are looking to try your hand, just show up and sign up on site!
